In 2023, twenty-year councilmember Susan McCartney narrowly won the mayoral election with 30% of the vote. Despite her long tenure on the council, Mayor McCartney soon displayed a lack of understanding of how our Faulkner Act government operates. She repeatedly embarrassed herself when she illegally attempted to tie-break 2-2 Council votes, violating municipal law in order to maintain the 25-year tenure of town attorney Richard Trenk, undermining the majority on the council.
As Mayor, McCartney's approach to the Planning Board—where she appoints each member—has been to consistently approve projects that detract from the town’s character, increase traffic, compromise public safety, and disregard environmental considerations, particularly in the case of street trees. Supporting her agenda are councilmember loyalists Tammy Williams and Michelle Casalino, both of whom benefitted from generous campaign contributions from developers, lawyers and town appointees. Notably, Tammy Williams hosted $5,000-per-plate fundraisers, raising questions about who she is working for.
