Mayor Susan McCartney claims she is an environmentalist. Yet time and time again she undermines the legislation that Our Green West Orange members fight for. She refuses to demand LEED certification from our wealthy, tax-abated real estate groups or require solar panels on major developments. When OGWO finally corralled enough votes on the town council for a tree ordinance, she shoehorned in a tree fund so developers could pay their way out of their tree-planting obligation. Now, when the town council finally passed a transitional ban on gas-powered blowers that wouldn't take full effect until 2026, she vetoed the legislation.
Here are the mayor's objections to the gas-powered blowers ordinance and counter arguments from Jared Gavski, who co-owns Eco-Quip, a company that sells green landscaping equipment and has successfully transitioned towns in NJ, NY and CT to more eco-friendly landscaping techniques.
